The Professional Athlete Podcast with Ken Gunter

Mar 10, 2020

Dr. Greg Cartin is a Sports Psychologist who helps PGA Golfers train their mental game to perform at their best when it counts. He’s the new performance expert for Golf Magazine and runs a consulting business where he works with professionals, amateurs and corporate teams on mindfulness and improving the way they handle the challenges that come with normal human thought. With an approach rooted in Eastern Philosophy, Greg takes us through what he refers to as an acceptance model. We discuss whether it’s possible to actually control thought during performance and high pressure moments. What it’s like working with PGA pros on tour and how his work with golfers helps pave the way for them to get out of their own head and access skill. The idea that “thoughts don’t hit golf shots”. How the “anxiety gap” can cause us to underperform in the present due to fear of events that haven’t yet occurred in the future. He weighs in on whether or not there is any such thing as a quick fix and how for the love of all things holy we can be more present.
